2012 IBC – Performing Nonstructural Plan Reviews
This two-day seminar will help participants better understand and apply the requirements of the 2012 International Building Code (IBC®) regarding the knowledge of performing a nonstructural plan review. When you complete this seminar, you will be able to determine whether a given set of building plans complies with the outlined requirements of the 2012 IBC.
The topics covered in this course are not all inclusive. Selected topics that mirror the plan review record are included and additional topics applicable to most construction projects are covered.
Instructor: Mike Giachetti has been with ICC for 11 years and is currently a senior staff engineer in ICC’s Chicago Regional Office Plan Review Department.
Most of his activities involve supervision of the plan review department.
In addition to his supervisory duties, he performs architectural and structural plan reviews of commercial and residential structures, provides interpretations of the International Codes, and assists with the development and updating of the codes. He teaches several building code seminars including Nonstructural and Structural Plan Review, Fundamentals of the International Building Code and Solving Means of Egress.
Previously, he has been the instructor for an on-line class on Residential and Non-Residential Plan Review for Red Rocks Community College in Colorado. He previously served as part of the ASTM D07 committee which was involved with wood analysis. He also served as part of the committee for the development of the International Existing Building Code. He holds both a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Legal Aspects and Ethics for Building Departments
Description: Legal Aspects and ethics for Building Departments-The first part of this one-day course provides individuals with guidelines for administering the legal aspects of code enforcement, prosecution and maintenance. Topics will include historical results of ignoring regulations, interpretation and application of pertinent laws and theories of legal liability. The second part will discuss ethics, with a discussion of “real world” issues that affect the perception and performance of the code enforcement staff.

IBC Advanced Means of Egress
Description: IBC Advanced Means of Egress-An advanced look at the means of egress requirements included in Chapter 10 of the International Building Code. The presentation will include detailed discussions on the design and review of the means of egress in unusual occupancies. Subjects included in the class are malls, assembly occupancies, special egress components, smoke proof enclosures, horizontal exits and exit passageways. Practical examples will be used to illustrate code requirements. This class is designed for those students that have a basic understanding of how the means of egress is designed and reviewed.

2012 IBC Care Facilities Provisions
Description: This seminar will address provisions in the 2012 IBC and referenced standards relating to the design and construction of care facilities such as medical care, custodial care, ambulatory care and day care facilities. It will focus on the specific decision making needed to apply the provisions appropriately by highlighting the differences between the various types of care activities. Participants will listen to lecture, discuss examples and participate in activities that pertain to applying sections of the IBC to care facilities.

IBC Assembly Spaces
Description: This seminar will address the 2012 IBC requirements applicable to design and construction of assembly spaces. It will address the differences between the various Group A occupancies and how assembly uses may also fit within the business or educational occupancy classifications. The discussion will include the unique IBC criteria applicable to accessibility, fire protection and building size issues in assembly buildings.

The 2013 Annual Meeting of the North Dakota Building Officials Association featured the election of the new slate of officers. Pictured here are, from left, Bruce Taralson of Fargo, retiring Past President; Todd Johnson of Wahpeton, the new Past President; Christine Rose of Fargo, President; Steve Johnson of Grand Forks, Vice President; and Shawn Oradnik of Bismarck, Secretary-Treasurer. Others elected to the Board of Directors were Darrael Zaback, at-large representative; Doug Lalim, southwest representative; and Scott Boura, northeast representative. The three-day conference was held in Bismarck. The membership meeting included planning for the spring training event April 2-4, 2014 in Grand Forks and the next Annual Meeting in Fargo on September 10-12, 2014.
